Kilimanjaro National Park covers an area of 756 km2.  The park was gazette in 1973.  Its altitude varies from 1829 meters at the Marangu gate to 5895 m at the snow – capped.

Kibo Peak.  The major attractions include the major volcanic centers – Shira in the west (404 –m) is the oldest in its lava formation followed by the rugged peak of Mawenzi in the east (5148m) while the snow-capped Kibo (5895) in the middle is the most recent.  Changes in vegetation from the surrounding savannah grasslands to Montain forest, morrland, and tundra alpine desert and eventually to the snow – capped Kibo Peak accuring concomitantly with changes in attitude and temperature are other attractions.  Large mammals which can be seen especially in western Kilimanjaro include Harvey’s and Abbott’s duikers, elephants, buffalos,  elands, leopards, black and white colobus monkeys and blue monkeys. Situated just 3 south of the Equator, the snow-capped. Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa and heist free standing outcrop in the world.Marangu gate is 48 km from Moshi Town and 90 km from Kilimanjaro International Airport, It takes 45 – 60 minutes from Moshi or 11/2 hours from KIA.

The ascent can be made from Machame,  Londrosi and Rongai but the most common one is the Marangu route, which takes 5 days –three days ascent and two days descent.

  • Drink at least three to four litres of water a day.
  • Use water filters and purifying pills.
  • Take enough snacks like energy bars
  • Do not move too fast.
  • Move as lightly as possible.
  • High factor lip balm and sun block is essential.
  • Nausea and headache pills.
  • New boots should be walked-in
  • Use a sleeping mat when camping.
  • Use a thermal flask on summit night.
  • Thermal glove liners allow easier camera.
  • Use only new camera and headlamp batteries.
  • Guides and porters will expect tips.
